2006 fatal dog attacks by breed |
---|
In 2006, 2 dog bite fatalities involved canines from 2 or more different breeds, thus producing a death count total of 32, rather than 30. Six dog breeds each contributed to 1 death: boxer, English mastiff, great pyrenees-mix, mixed-breed, presa canario and wolf-dog hybrid.
Ashton Scott, 11-months old, was attacked by a family rottweiler and died on January 5, 2006. According to the Childress Index, a newspaper in Childress, Texas, Ashton Lee Scott was under the care of his great-grandmother when the dog attacked the boy. "She was warming a bottle for the infant when the rottweiler escaped from another room in the house and fatally mauled the infant," reported KCBD-TV. The Childress County Grand will review the case, according to the news report. Very little other information was located about this baby's death, including the outcome of the grand jury review. Nearly a decade later, the baby's mother left a message on a forum board stating, "My Ashton Lee Scott, January 28, 2005 to January 5, 2006. He is with Jesus now. He had a beautiful smile, and he was a delight in my life. That is when I was allowed to be with him," she wrote. Ashton was buried at Childress Cemetery, in Childress County, Texas, according to Find a Grave, a website that allows the public to search cemetery records. No other information is known. Connor Lourens, 7-years old, was killed by his neighbor's English mastiff. The attack occurred at approximately 12:35 pm at a residence on Easter Brook Road. The dog attacked him in the doorway, while he was entering the home, Lunenburg Police Lt. Jim Marino said. The boy often entered the neighbor's home and spent time there, Marino said. Connor was transported by helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:33 pm. Roger and Kimberly Lucier owned the dog and the house where the attack occurred. Their 1-year old male mastiff, "Buddy," weighed 140 pounds and was neutered. The dog was euthanized after the attack. Connor was a student at Lunenburg Primary School. Connor's parents created the Connor Lourens Memorial fund shortly after his death with an initial goal of raising money to replace Kid's Kingdom playground at T.C. Passios Elementary School. That goal was accomplished in December 2006 with the creation of the Connor B. Lourens Memorial Playground., reported the Sentinel and Enterprise. [source citations]

Dominic Giordano, 4-years old, was killed by a rottweiler while playing in his aunt and uncle's backyard. The attack occurred at approximately 4:40 pm, according to his mother, Emma Giordano. He died the next morning after emergency surgery. "Surgeons toiled for more than five hours to repair Dominic Giordano's severely damaged neck and face," reported the Great Falls Tribune. The 3-year-old male rottweiler belonged to Tina and Matt Jones, the victim's aunt and uncle. It was euthanized at the request of the family, Cascade County Sheriff David Castle said. The boy's family had been temporarily living with the Joneses who owned four rottweilers. On the day of the attack, Emma allowed her son to play outside. The rottweilers, which were "raised for show," were housed in chain-link kennels in the backyard. When she checked on him about 10 minutes later, she discovered two of the dogs loose in the yard. The 88-pound male rottweiler was standing over her son's bleeding body. After the attack, the Joneses denied the dog had been aggressive before. [source citations]

Charles Dalton, 52-years old, was found dead on the side of Vircassdell Lane by his older brother. Davie County sheriff's deputies responded to his brother's 911 call around 9:30 pm. Arriving deputies found Dalton deceased and two blood-covered pit bulls nearby. The Forsyth County medical examiner said Dalton bled to death from multiple dog bites. Investigators said he sustained severe wounds to his face, scalp and arms. His right hand was also mangled in the attack. Dalton's parents said his death marked the third son they had lost in 15 years. The dogs belonged to his cousin, Jimmy Ray Cowan III, 52, who owned three pit bulls that frequently ran loose. Two of them, a female pit bull, "Infinity," and a male pit bull, "Rocky," were found bloodied underneath Cowan's porch and confiscated by Davie County Animal Control. Rocky died of parvo while in quarantine. Cowan was later indicted for involuntary manslaughter in connection to Dalton's death. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve 20 to 24 months in jail, District Attorney Garry Frank said. [source citations]

Quillan Cottrell, 3-years old, was killed by his step-uncle's chained rottweiler. According to Daviess County Sherriff Kevin Heldenbrand, Quillan was playing with the dog in the family's garage around 11:30 am when the dog attacked. "This dog was chained up. The little boy either went to the dog or he got in the chain-length and didn't realize it," Heldenbrand said. Quillan's mother discovered her son's body. She got him away from the dog and called 911. When deputies arrived, it was evident the child had not survived. One deputy shot and killed the dog upon arrival. The rottweiler had stripped the toddler of his clothes, Heldenbrand said. He suffered numerous bite wounds to his head and neck. The boy's family had been watching the dog; the dog was not normally at their home. The 140-pound male rottweiler was not even a year old. Heldenbrand noted that Quillan's death was especially hard because the boy's stepfather and his brother -- the owner of the dog, who had been visiting the family when the attack occured -- both worked at the Pattonsburg jail. A 45 to 50-year old adult male -- whose identity was not released -- was mauled to death by three guard dogs while trespassing at a steel storage yard. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the property in the 1800 block of West Compton Boulevard about 5:30 am to investigate a suspected burglary. Upon arrival, they found the dogs -- three pit bull-mixes -- actively mauling the man. The man sustained severe head and back injuries. He was transported to Memorial Hospital of Gardena, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s Lt. Mike Aleric said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the dogs attacked the man after he jumped the fence at the Cal State Steel Company. Security guards who heard the man's screams called 911. Sheriff's deputies arrived to find the man badly mauled and still under attack. Authorities were able order the dogs away without using weapons. The dogs were taken into custody and quarantined at the Los Angeles County animal shelter. No other information was released by police. [source citations]

Juan Garcia, 53-years old, was mauled to death by a pit bull. The attack occurred around 7:00 pm at a home off County Road 419, according to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office. The man was deceased when deputies arrived. He sustained many bite wounds to his face, arms and legs. Investigators said Garcia tried to fight off the dog with a 2-by-4 piece of wood, which was covered in blood. During the attack, the dog dragged the man more than 50 feet and stripped him of his clothes and shoes. The owner of the dog, Julie Coletta Pederson, told authorities the dog had been penned earlier that day, because it had acted viciously toward livestock. But her 90-pound male pit bull, "Max," had gotten loose. Pederson was not home during the attack. When she returned, she found her blood-soaked dog standing guard over Garcia's body. Pederson sometimes employed Garcia as a handyman, but did not know why he was at the property that day. Garcia had been to Pederson's home twice in April to chop and stack wood and had not encountered any problems with the dog. [source citations]

Dianna Acklen, 60-years old, was killed by three large dogs. A group of people driving by discovered her lifeless body in the 2000 block of Knights Church Road around 5:23 pm. A preliminary autopsy determined Acklen had "died of blood loss due to wounds inflicted by a canine." The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said that she was bitten between 200 to 300 times. Acklen was a Franklin County library employee who took a daily walk on Knights Church Road near her home. The attack occurred on the property of Ronnie Swann. Dental records showed that a mixed-breed belonging to Swann and two great pyrenees-mixes belonging to Dr. Ephraim Gammada were involved in the attack. TBI also said Swann's mixed-breed was the sire of Gammada's dogs. All three dogs had bite marks consistent with wounds on Acklen. Inconclusive DNA tests spared Gammada's dogs from death. Legislators later passed The Dianna Acklen Act of 2007, which created a felony dog attack statute and imposed strict liability when a dog running at large injures a person. [source citations]

Raymond Tomco, 77-years old, was killed by three pit bulls inside his White Sands neighborhood home. His daughter Christina Tomco, who he shared the home with, returned at about 1:30 pm and encountered three bloody pit bulls and her blood-soaked father lying on the floor. Calvert County sheriff's deputies said the man had "countless" bite marks on his arms and hands. One of the bites severed at least one artery, likely causing his death, Cpl. Darron Makrokanis said. Tomco had been taking a prescription drug to prevent blood clots, potentially worsening the bleeding. When Calvert County Animal Control arrived at the scene, all three pit bulls were roaming the streets. One of them, "Onyx," was shot due to his aggression, the other two were captured and two other pit bulls chained outside -- also belonging to Christina -- were confiscated. In recent years, Christina had been cited nine times for having unlicensed and unrestrained dogs; she was issued fines totaling $600. None of the dogs were spay or neutered. Christina raised and sold pit bulls, authorities said. [source citations]

Shaun McCafferty, 27-years old, was mauled to death by a pack of pit bulls. The attack occurred on June 7 in a driveway in the 4500 block of Sandstone Drive. The victim's girlfriend, Lacy Gidney, also sustained severe injuries from the dogs but managed to climb a fence and get away. San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to the remote desert area around 9:15 pm for a report of a "man down." Investigators initially thought it was a homicide due to the severe trauma to his upper body. "He was all tore up," sheriff's Sgt. Frank Bell said. "He had been rolled around in the dirt. His pants were (down). His shirt was up. His clothes were torn." McCafferty and Gidney, who was pregnant, had been living in a shack without utilities on the property, Bell said. An investigation revealed the couple was attacked outside of a meth lab. Authorities confiscated eight pit bulls from the property, which was later described as a "ramshackle compound." The dogs' owner, Pam McKee, 52, and two men staying at the compound, were arrested on narcotic-related offences. [source citations]

Javlyin Anderson, 14-months old, was killed by a chained family dog. The attack occurred at approximately 4:00 pm at the child's residence in the 2400 block of Caney Creek Road. The child had been playing in the front of her home under the supervision of her two teenage siblings when she wandered out of sight, according to Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight. The family kept two pit bulls chained near the home. When she was found, one of the pit bulls, "Brutus," was attacking her. She was transported to Laird Hospital in Union, where was pronounced dead, Knight said. Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker said the child died of blood loss. A few months earlier, a neighbor had seen the same dog running loose in her pasture. Pat May went inside to grab a gun to shoot the dog. When she came back, it was gone. "I have wished a million times I had gotten back in time to have shot it," May said. "It's been a sad week around here." Knight said pit bulls are not appropriate pets for families with small children due to their aggressiveness. [source citations]

Gemma Carlos, 2-years old, was killed by a chained rottweiler. Around 11:20 am, 30 minutes after she was reported missing, El Paso County sheriff's deputies found her body inside a plywood doghouse, where a rottweiler was chained. A deputy had to gun down the dog to reach her body. "I counted six shots. It took that much to kill the dog," said witness Juan Antonio Gonzalez. The attack occurred in an unfenced yard in the 15100 block of Tungsten Drive. She suffered a dislocated spine close to her neck and other injuries. Her injuries were consistent with being shaken by a large dog, chief medical examiner Dr. Paul W. Shrode said. The child had spent the morning with a caretaker, because her mother works in the morning. Family members said she wandered away from the caretaker's home and encountered the rottweiler. Leonardo Sandoval, who works for a nonprofit called Pet Guardian Angel, owned the rottweiler. The dog was vaccinated and was legally tied in an unfenced back yard, said Lorenzo Hinojos, animal control program manager. [source citations]

Sandra Piovesan, 50-years old, was fatally mauled by her nine wolf-dog hybrids. On July 17, 2006, her body was discovered in the outdoor pen where she kept the animals at her Salem Township home. Police responded to her residence on Croft Road after her daughter found her deceased in the enclosure with the animals. She suffered extensive injuries to her extremities and the lower portion of her torso. Piovesan, who was known to breed the animals, kept all animals intact. She reportedly treated them like her children, believing they offered "unqualified love". She occasionally fed them roadkill, which concern for authorities. Notably, the pack had previously killed a female wolf, another pack member, during the summer mating season last year. Westmoreland County Humane Officer Elaine Gower had visited Piovesan's home multiple times prior to the incident, expressing concerns about her control over the numerous animals. Following the discovery of her body and the clear evidence of a brutal attack, all nine of the hybrids were destroyed at the scene. [source citations]

Brandon Coleman, 25-years old, was killed by his pet pit bull. On Thursday morning, July 13, 2006, his body was discovered by his roommate, Rondrick Smith, at their apartment at 309 Grant Avenue in Morgantown. Initially, Morgantown Police had not determined the cause of death, but Coleman's body bore injuries, including dog bites. The state medical examiner later ruled that Coleman died from "injuries sustained to the trachea by dog bite," confirming his pit bull, named Peacemaker, caused his death. Peacemaker, Coleman's longtime pet, was euthanized the same day his owner's body was found. Monongalia County authorities stated the dog's destruction had nothing to due to its breed. The Canine Adoption Center supervisor, Dana Johnson, reported that the same pit bull had been involved in a dog-on-dog incident in May. Coleman reportedly had an "ongoing medical condition" that caused seizures, which some initial reports suggested might have contributed to the incident, with the dog potentially trying to help but causing damage during a seizure. Mariah Puga, 3-years old, was killed by her family's pit bull and rottweiler. The attack occurred Monday night shortly before 9:00 pm, near Lincoln Avenue and 5th Street in Hargill. Hidalgo County Sheriff investigators reported that Mariah slipped out of her mother's sight for about 15 minutes and went outside to pet a new litter of puppies in the backyard. Valerie, a pit bull, was tied to the fence with her puppies. Sasha, another pit bull, and Tiny, a rottweiler, were roaming around the yard. A few minutes later, Laura Davila, the child's mother, heard Mariah crying and the dogs barking. Laura rushed over and kicked Sasha and Tiny off Mariah. Laura and Diane Davila, the child's grandmother rushed the toddler to Edinburg Regional Hospital, where she died at about 4:00 am the next morning. Diane held Mariah in the car, while she bled heavily. "When I was carrying her, I could feel the gush of blood on her neck," Diane said. Justice of the Peace Charlie Espinosa ordered an autopsy. The two pit bulls and a rottweiler were taken into quarantine by officials. [source citations]

Jimmie Mae McConnell, 71-years old, was mauled and killed by a pit bull. Around 11:30 am, she was working in her garden, using a rotary tiller, at her home in the 3100 block of Longwood Avenue, when the neighbor's pit bull vaulted over a fence and attacked her. When firefighters arrived at the scene, "the dog was still on the victim." They had to hit the dog with an ax and a pike pole to get it off McConnell, officials said. Wyandotte County coroner Alan Hancock said initial autopsy findings showed she died of cardiac arrhythmia brought on by the trauma of the attack. McConnell had extensive bites along her arms, legs and torso. The owner of the dog, Derrick Lee, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Wyandotte County prosecutor Jerome Gorman argued that Lee violated a city ordinance by harboring a dog that was banned, and that violation caused McConnell's death. Lee’s first trial in Wyandotte County District Court ended after jurors couldn’t reach a verdict. During the second trial, the jury convicted him. Lee was sentenced to 4-years in prison. John Brannaman, 81-years old, was attacked by a pair of loose pit bulls. On the morning of July 28, when Brannaman was taking out the trash, the dogs attacked him in the front yard of his home in the 1000 block of West Tropicana Court. He sustained severe dog bite wounds to his face, legs and extremities. He died three days later at Orlando Regional Medical Center due to complications from the attack and heart failure. Neighbors said the pit bulls came out of nowhere and suddenly attacked Brannaman. One neighbor, Bobby McIntyre, grabbed his shotgun shot and killed the male dog while another neighbor used a shovel to pry the female dog off the elderly man. The female dog recently had a litter of eight puppies. Osceola County Animal Control confiscated the nine dogs after the owner, Peter Santiago, surrendered them. About a month later, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office charged Santiago with culpable negligence in connection to Brannaman's death. The medical examiner's report confirmed "multiple dog bites" as a contributory cause of death. [source citations]

Shawna Willey, 30-years old, was killed by her presa canario as she bathed the animal. Around 3:25 pm, Coral Springs police received a call that a woman was being bitten by a dog at her residence in the 9300 block of NW 39 Court. Wiley's daughter, Tyra, witnessed the attack and ran to a neighbor's home to get help. When police and paramedics arrived, they saw Shawna dead -- covered in blood and wounds -- and her 120 pound male dog, "Xeno," standing over her acting aggressively. Officers shot and killed the dog. The animal jumped or fell into the pool before dying. Another presa canario and pit bull were inside the home at the time. Willey's family -- a boyfriend and her two children -- had lived in the neighborhood for three years. But Willey had a history of problems with the dogs. In 2000, when living in Hillsborough County, she was charged with having a dog at large after the animal "threatened (a) witness into the house." In 2002, she was charged with owning a vicious animal. Her boyfriend, Lazaro Rivero, said she kept the dogs for "protection." [source citations]

Frank Baber, 49-years old, was brutally mauled to death by two pit bulls. The attack occurred early Monday morning, according to Dickens County Sheriff Ken Brendle. Baber lived in a motor home inside Blackburn's Auto-Salvage yard in the 100 block of South Parker Avenue in Spur. The owner of the business found his body around 9:20 am and called police. Investigators said Baber shared the salvage yard with the dogs, but did not own them. Baber had been living there for about three months. Brendle said the attack apparently started inside a building next to Baber's motor home. There were signs that Baber tried to fight back. "There is about a 20-foot trail of torn up ground and blood spatter leading outside," state media reports. When Brendle arrived at the scene, he found Baber lying on his back. The condition of the body indicated the attack occurred about three hours earlier. While at the scene, Brendle learned the dogs had bitten someone a day earlier. The two pit bulls, both female, were put down. The owner of the salvage yard declined to comment. [source citations]

Pablo Fleites, 56-years old, was fatally attacked by a male boxer. The attack occurred inside a property in the 20200 block of SW 190th Street, where Fleites lived in a shack on a 3-acre farm property. According to the medical examiner's report, between 7:30 am and 6:30 pm, Fleites consumed approximately 18 beers. At some point thereafter, he entered into a pen where two pedigree boxer dogs -- a 5-year old male and a 6-month old female -- were contained. At 9:00 pm, the owner of the dogs found him inside the pen. "He had trauma (dog bites) to his face, head, and neck areas. The male dog had blood on his face and body," states the report. Miami-Dade Animal Control euthanized the adult male boxer. They did not seize the young female boxer. According to the man's landlord, Fleites was born in Cuba, states the report. "He had no living relatives and was homeless. He had been allowed to sleep in a shed on the property for the past ten years," states the report. He performed odd jobs around the farm and assisted farmers with their daily chores. [source citations]

Julius Graham, 2-years old, was fatally mauled by a rottweiler. The attack occurred Tuesday afternoon, while the child was staying at his grandparents’ home in Snow Hill. When Graham mistakenly wandered into a neighboring yard, he encountered an aggressive dog. The rottweiler dug a hole under a fence and got out of its pen to attack the child. Graham was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, where he was pronounced dead. Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith said authorities responded to the scene within four minutes of the 911 call. Upon arrival, deputies found the child's grandmother trying to protect the dog, Smith said. "The dog was still running toward them, growling in a vicious manner. The deputy had to pull his gun and shoot the dog," Smith said. Linda Sewall, director of Greene County's health department said the case was sent to the district attorney to determine whether charges would be filed against the dog's owners, Katona and Johnny Ormond, who were out of town on a cruise at the time. A family member was caring for the dog. [source citations]

Jeannine Fusco, 44-years old, was killed by a male pit bull she was dog sitting. Ramapo Police Department received a call about the attack around 3:50 am. Upon arrival to the Dunn Road home, officers found Fusco's bleeding body inside a two-car garage. "She had severe bites to her throat and her head," Ramapo Detective Lt. Brad Weidel said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister, Valerie Wall, 43, sustained injuries to her leg and hand; she was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. The dog fled into Fusco's backyard. When officers found the dog, they shot it four times, killing it, using a handgun and rifle, Weidel said. "They were dog sitting for an acquaintance, and she let the dog out early in the morning, and when it came back inside, the animal went right after her," Weidel said. The owner was later identified as Aaron Hall. The sisters had been dog sitting two dogs for Hall since June while he was in the process of moving. About 10 days ago, Hall took one dog back with him to New Jersey, but left the 4-year-old, "100-pound K-Man in Airmont." [source citations]

David "Ted" McCurry, 41-years old, was brutally killed by a pit bull. The attack occurred after McCurry and Kimbery Cunningham drove to the residence of Firas Beseisso on FM 1097 to inquire about the sale of a large pit bull. At approximately 4:00 pm, while the three were talking, "Drix," an intact male pit bull, broke free from his owner and attacked McCurry and Cunningham. The dog first targeted Cunningham, who jumped on the roof of her car for safety, while the two men struggled to restrain the dog. During the struggle, the pit bull attacked McCurry, inflicting bites to over 90% of his body. The fatal bite was to his neck. The Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Conroe, which performed the autopsy, listed McCurry's cause of death as a "completely severed carotid artery and jugular vein and fracture to the back of the neck." Beseisso had purchased the dog nine months ago for "home security." According to Beseisso, the dog had never shown aggression before. Montgomery County Animal Control confiscated the dog. It was later euthanized by court order. [source citations]

Ariel Pogue, 2-years old, was killed by one of her family's three rottweilers. At approximately 5:20 pm, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting the dog attack. Camp Hill police officers were first to arrive at the child's home on Carver Hill Road. Neighbors said the girl and her mother were getting out of their car when one of the family's three rottweilers, which was not tied up, attacked the toddler. David Holloway, 14, was walking nearby with a friend when he heard the mother screaming. "And she was yelling help on this dirt road. I ran all the way from my Grandma's house to her house to help get the dog off," Holloway said. Despite his efforts, Pogue's injuries were too severe and she died at the scene. Neighbors and family members say the dogs were never aggressive in the past. Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said the dog involved was euthanized and sent to Auburn University's Veterinarian Clinic. Abbett said it was the first time in his 12 years as a sheriff that a person in the county was attacked and killed by a dog. [source citations]

John Matthew Davis, 10-years old, was killed and eaten by up to six dogs. The attack occurred after 5:30 pm as Matthew walked home. His body was found at about 9:30 pm on Homelight Road in the driveway of the dog owner's home. Authorities charged Bentley Collins with one count of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of keeping unconfined, dangerous animals. Collins surrendered his dogs to authorities; five were euthanized, the sixth was stolen from the pound. During the criminal trial, it was revealed the dogs were pit bull-mixes that had a history of aggression. Multiple people testified that dogs had tried to attack them, as well as their chickens. Collins was convicted on all charges on January 30, 2009. Collins filed an appeal, and in February 2012, the South Carolina Court of Appeals granted Collins a new trial. The issue was the prosecutions use of the child's autopsy photographs. The state appealed the decision. In 2014, the Supreme Court of South Carolina reversed the appeals court decision, reinstating the conviction of Bentley Collins. [source citations]

Allen Young, 21 months old, was killed by his father's four pit bulls. The attack occurred in the 900 block of Sweetpea Road just after 10:00 pm, Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell said. The child was asleep in his father's bed when the father stepped outside to talk to his landlord. Michael Young was reportedly outside for "5 to 10 minutes." In this time, the pit bulls dragged the boy from the bed and began mauling him on the floor. When the father re-entered the home, he found his son on the kitchen floor bleeding. Young transported the boy to Bamberg County Hospital where Allen was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland’s trauma center. He died just hours after the attack. The father and son had moved into the mobile home Saturday afternoon -- the day the dogs killed the child. Young said was planning to build the dogs a secure outdoor area the next day. Young said he never had any problems with the dogs before. Authorities charged Michael Anton Young with criminal negligence and disregard for the safety of a child, which is involuntary manslaughter. Luis Romero Jr., 2-years old, was killed by his family's two rottweilers. The attack occurred around 9:00 am in the front yard of the family's home in the 6700 block of South Gila Avenue, near West Valencia Road and South Camino de la Tierra. Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman, said Romero was home with his mother and sister, his father had gone to the store. Somehow, Romero got onto the front porch of the family's mobile home. The two dogs dragged the boy off the porch and started mauling him. After the mother intervened, the father returned home. The couple frantically attempted to drive the boy to the hospital. On the way, they flagged down a deputy for help. Luis was airlifted to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Barkman noted the rottweilers were not contained; they were being kept in the yard by a wireless device. The two male rottweilers were euthanized. One day after the boy's death, the family fled, likely to Mexico. Barkman said the boy's body was sent back to Mexico. [source citations]

Richard Adams, 47-years old, was mutilated, eaten and killed by a pit bull. A Russell County sheriff's deputy responded to OKI Auto Sales at 443 Highway 165 and found a pit bull attacking the man's body, eating his flesh. The deputy shot and killed the vicious dog. Russell County Coroner John Morgan said he pronounced Adams dead at 9:10 am. Morgan said that Adam lived next door at 449 Highway 165, Lot 10. Morgan later determined Adams did not have any health problems before he died. "There were signs that he was alive when the dog attacked him," Morgan said. "There were signs of a struggle." On the morning of the attack, Adams had been on his way to visit a friend who resides at 443 Highway 165, which was formerly S & S Auto Repair. This is where he encountered the vicious animal. A man who stopped by the garage that morning around 9:00 am to feed the dog, discovered Adams' mutilated body. The man called for help. By 2018, the metal warehouse at 443 Highway 165 had morphed into the "Game Bred Boxing Club." [source citations]

James Eisaman, 40-years old, was killed by his girlfriend's pet rottweilers. Akron police said that paramedics responded to the home on Blaine Avenue just after 4:30 am. Sandra Ross, the 911 caller, said she heard noises in the basement and found Eisaman lying on the stairs, bleeding from the head. Arriving officers shot and killed one of the rottweilers. The other dog was confiscated. At the time of the attack, Eisaman was in a "leg immobilizer" due to a broken leg. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said that Eisaman died as the result of dog bites to the neck and head. The manner of death was an accident. There were no defensive wounds on his arms. Ross speculated that Eisaman went into the basement to break up a fight between her two male dogs, "Randy" and "Kyle." Eisaman was barely alive when she reached him, but she said he mouthed the words: "Please don't destroy them," referring to the dogs. The dogs lived in the basement, but had access to a fenced-in backyard. A neighbor said that fights between the two dogs were not unusual. [source citations]

Pedro Rios, 4-years old, was killed by two loose pit bull-mixes. The attack occurred around 1:30 pm in the 8900 block of C.E. King Parkway, a mobile home park in east Harris County. Pedro and his brother Peter were playing outside when the dogs attacked. Peter managed to escape. After hearing screams, Pedro's mother, Rosa Isela Rios, rushed outside to find him being attacked by the dogs. She suffered minor injuries as she tried to fight them off, but the dogs refused to stop the attack. The dogs only released the boy after being distracted by the lights and sirens of the Harris County sheriff's deputies cars, which arrived minutes later. Deputies then opened fired, killing one of the dogs and wounding the other. Pedro was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he later died. The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office determined the boy's death was caused by multiple blunt and sharp force injuries to the head and neck. The manner of death was an accident. Both dogs were believed to be owned, but no one admitted to owning them. [source citations]
